The Green Rescue Organic Association Incorporated is an agricultural enterprise initiated in 2007 by Dr. Estela Caringal-Taño, Senior Researcher of Quezon Agricultural Experiment Station – Department of Agriculture, Region IV – A, Lagalag, Tiaong, Quezon. Dr. Taño is also a farmer, Development worker and community organizer.
It all began when Dr. Estela Taño was working on a community participatory action research on improving the productivity of native cattle under upland ecosystem. She studied a lot of different ethno veterinary practices that could be taught to the local farmers in the mountain areas. She was then invited to attend the seminar on Natural Farming by the Citizen’s National Network against Poverty and Corruption. From the said seminar she was able to learn more about different fruits, fish and bone concoctions which were of great benefits to man, animals and plants through the traditional biotechnology method of fermentation. From these, she reconciled through scientific readings the basis of those formulations and explanations from the seminar. She also remembered how her parents used to preserve vegetables, meat and fish through fermentation and how they even made money out of the process.
From the ethno – veterinary point of view, the symptoms of some cattle ailments such as colds, fever and others were very much the same of those in humans. In areas where the farmers are poor and there are no veterinarians with synthetic drugs, there was no other choice but to teach the farmers to be resourceful and to find local alternative medicines. Dr. Tano observed how the locals get oregano leaves and put them on top of newly cooked rice, squeeze them and have their children with colds and coughs drink the juice. From then, Dr. Tano pursued the study on the fermentation of oregano leaves, originally for the use of the farmers for their animals then later on was developed for the use of community.
The enterprise is known for being organic and for the use of oregano and other indigenous herbs. GROP uses organic fertilizer in growing crops needed for their products. Organic agriculture combines tradition, innovation and science to benefit the shared environment and promote fair relationships and a good quality of life for all involved.
Aside from being organic, Green Rescue Organic Products is also known for its health benefits.
